Smart thermostats didn’t exist until a relatively short time ago, and now they’re everywhere! Actually, smart everything has gotten very popular in the past ten years or so. In the blink of an eye, practically every imaginable household electronic device has become “smart,” including but not limited to fridges, speakers, and- you guessed it- thermostats. Smart technology can generally be controlled by voice commands and/or connected apps on mobile devices. Smart technology offers many benefits to our homes, our lives, and our well-being, and thermostats are no exception. Here are just a few of the many benefits of installing a smart thermostat in your home.
More Control Over Temperature
In the past, programmable thermostats gave us a decent amount of control over our homes’ temperatures. We could set a certain temperature to keep our homes at while we were at work as well as setting up a time for the house to warm up or cool down before we got home. However, with the advent of smart thermostats, it’s easier than ever to control the temperature whenever we want to. If you’re coming home early from work in the middle of summer, a programmable thermostat won’t kick on until your scheduled time, meaning you’ll come home to an uncomfortably warm house and then you’ll have to adjust the temperature manually and wait for the air to kick on. With a smart thermostat, you can simply open the connected app as you’re leaving the office and adjust the temperature. You’ll come home to a cool house, even though you came home early!
Energy Savings
Depending on your energy usage, a smart thermostat could have a slight impact on your energy bill or a large impact. Most smart thermostat apps have features that display the time it takes to cool down or heat up your house. This can help you avoid setting the temperature as low as possible to cool down your home faster (this generally does not work and drives your utility bills up). Knowing how long your home takes to reach the desired temperature helps you avoid wasting energy by setting the temperature too early- for example, if your home takes 20 minutes to cool down and you get home from work at 5, there’s no need to set your home to the desired temperature at 4. You can wait until 4:40 to set it and save 40 minutes of energy usage.
Tracking Energy Usage
Aside from saving money with lower energy costs, you can track your energy usage and self-regulate in order to stick to your budget. For example, if you’ve been running the air conditioning for 8 hours a day, you might be stressed or concerned about your budget. Smart thermostats and their connected apps provide an easy way to track energy usage and keep yourself within your desired range in order to stay within your budget. It’s helpful to know when you’re using the most energy and what it’s being used for.
Earlier Awareness of Thermostat Problems
Smart thermostats and their connected apps can help alert you to problems with your heating or cooling system more quickly than traditional programmable thermostats. Some smart thermostats allow you to set alerts when your home warms or cools past a certain temperature, indicating potential problems with your system. This feature can help you schedule service for a broken or malfunctioning system more quickly than you would be able to with a traditional thermostat.
Building a “Smart Home”
If you already have other smart devices, a smart thermostat can hook in nicely with the rest of your devices. For example, if you have a smart speaker or virtual assistant such as Amazon’s Alexa, you may be able to connect the thermostat to the virtual assistant and control it with your voice. If you value smart technology within your home or are simply fascinated with it, a smart thermostat is a smart investment.
