Working from home during quarantine and social distancing presents many different challenges. Some of those challenges are obvious, like figuring out how to set up an office in your kitchen or how to keep your kids entertained while you’re trying to work. Some of the challenges presented by working from home are a little less obvious. What happens if something breaks and needs fixing or replacing while you’re working from home? You are going to be home all day anyway, there is no better time than now!
Easier to Schedule Appointments
Before most people started working from home, getting your heater serviced could be kind of a pain. You’d have to take the day off of work and wait for the tech to arrive within the few-hour window you were given. Now, if you’re working from home, it’s a little bit easier! You’re home anyway, so waiting for the technician won’t disrupt your day. It’s best to schedule service for a standard AC or heater once per year, and schedule service for a heat pump system every six months. It’s best to get your system serviced before you need to use it. If your AC requires service, it’s a good idea to get it done in the winter or early spring so that if there are any problems, you don’t find out during the summer when your home gets unbearably hot. Similarly, it’s best to service heating systems in the summer or fall, before it ends up breaking in the winter and leaving you freezing cold.
Safety and Service
With COVID-19 sweeping across the world, you might be nervous about letting someone into your home to service your heater or AC. That’s understandable. Rest assured that there are a lot of precautions you can take to keep yourself, your family, and the technician safe! First of all, you can wear a mask. Disposable masks may be in short supply right now, but there are plenty of tutorials circulating the internet on how to make a mask out of old T-shirts or other spare fabric. Even simply pulling a bandanna or scarf over your face can suffice. Similarly, wearing gloves isn’t a bad idea, just to be safe. Avoid shaking hands with the technician who comes out to your home and do your best to stay six feet away from them. After they leave, take a Clorox wipe and sanitize the surfaces touched by the tech, including doorknobs and the surfaces of your heating or AC unit. Remember: services such as heating, cooling, and electrical are considered essential in most cases. Precautions are necessary, of course, but it’s okay to utilize those services!
Do I Really Need My Heater Or AC Serviced?
If you’re not having issues with your heater or AC, you might be tempted to put off getting it serviced until a later time. However, regular maintenance is essential for heating and cooling systems, even if there’s nothing wrong with your system. It’s similar to going to the doctor for an annual checkup. While it might seem like a good idea to wait until social distancing guidelines are lifted to have someone come out to your home, it’s important to stick to those annual and biannual guidelines for system service.
