Study Shows Indoor Air Temperature Affects Health and Wellness
Most of us only think about the thermostat when temperatures become uncomfortable—too hot or too cold—but a recent study from the Medical Research Council in Glasgow, U.K. reveals that temperature can play a role in our health as well as our comfort. The study showed that participants reporting “poor or fair health” went down by approximately 50% upon implementing slight increases in their home temperatures. Additionally, the study showed improvements in participants’ personal relationships and work and school attendance.
There has been a lot of discussion and study in recent years about whether or not it is more ideal for the human body to have cooler temperatures when it comes to sleeping. This study showed that, while this is true, the degree of cooler temperatures required for optimal sleep were minimal, falling within a range of 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit.
To experiment with these results for yourself, make sure you have an optimally functioning HVAC system and thermostat then observe the effects of increasing the temperature by two or three degrees.
