A water heater replacement might not be the first thing you think of when you think “home improvement,” but your water heater is an important tool to keep your home comfortable. Imagine if you had to start every day with a cold shower! Keeping your water heater in top shape with annual maintenance is very important and can extend its lifespan, but it’s also important to know when to start thinking towards replacing it. Like all appliances, water heaters have a limited lifespan. Is it time for you to consider a water heater replacement for your home? Here are a few signs to look out for that might indicate the need for a water heater replacement.

Your Water Heater is Getting Old

Even if your water heater seems to still be working properly, there comes a point where it’s living on borrowed time. The lifespan of your water heater will depend on the type of water heater it is, however, most of them last anywhere from 8-10 years. Be sure to check the manual on your water heater to see what kind of lifespan it has. Once you hit the 8-10 year mark, even if it seems to be working fine, you’ll need to start considering a water heater replacement. You don’t want to wait until your water heater breaks completely to start looking into replacements.

Your Hot Water is Running Out Too Fast

If your hot water seems to be running out too fast (for example, after only a few minutes in the shower), don’t immediately assume that it’s your roommate’s fault for hogging all the hot water. There may be a problem with your water heater. As your water heater ages and begins to decline, it’ll be able to heat smaller volumes of water at a time, resulting in your hot water running out more quickly. If you notice that your showers are getting shorter and colder, it may be time to look into a water heater replacement.

Your Heating Bills Are Higher Than Usual

If your heating bills have suddenly gone up and none of your habits have changed, your first thought might be that your HVAC system has a problem. While that’s certainly a possibility, the problem might be traced back to your aging water heater. As water heaters age, their efficiency declines, causing them to use more energy and resulting in a higher heating bill.

You Notice Rust On Your Water Heater

When it comes to water heaters, rust is never a good sign. Corrosion should only occur when a water heater is extremely old. If you see rust on your water heater, check how old it is. If it’s very old, you should replace it as soon as possible. Unfortunately, even if it’s not old, if you find rust, it will likely need to be replaced.
