Furnace Problems

Even though furnaces are reliable heating systems, as you start to use your furnace for the first few times this year, you may encounter some problems. Since you certainly don’t want to go without heat when temperatures are cool, try these troubleshooting tips before calling a heating professional.

Thermostat Setting

Whether you have a feature-rich, Wi-Fi-compatible thermostat or a basic device, the thermostat’s primary job is to signal the heating system to turn on and off. Make sure your thermostat is in “heat” mode and set above room temperature.

Electrical Power

If your heating systems isn’t engaging, switch your thermostat to the “on” fan setting. If your furnace is receiving power, the blower should turn on. If the heating system doesn’t engage, check the circuit panel for a tripped breaker. Next, check the furnace’s main switch, which looks like a typical light switch.

Air Filter

Sometimes your furnace may turn on, but airflow from the registers is weak. If this is the case, check the air filter to see if it needs to be replaced. A clogged air filter substantially reduces airflow, increases energy costs and may overheat the system. Additionally, make sure all registers are open.

Pilot Light Problems

Newer furnaces use electronic spark ignition or a hot surface ignitor, rather than a conventional standing pilot light. If your pilot fails to light, you may need to replace the electronic spark ignition or hot surface ignitor. In fact, it’s wise to keep a spare on hand so that you don’t get stuck in the middle of a cold snap without heat.

Unusual Noises

Furnace noises are the result of normal operation or the result of problems in the system. If you hear a low rumbling noise, take a look at the gas flame. If it’s yellow or orange, rather than a sharp blue, the gas valve should be cleaned. If that isn’t the cause of rumbling sounds, the blower, blower motor or draft inducer may need cleaning.
