Keeping your home’s heating and cooling systems running efficiently is essential for northeast Ohio residents. The area sees its share of extreme weather, with temperatures soaring in the summer and often dipping below zero in the dead of winter. To avoid spending a fortune on energy consumption, Cleveland-area homeowners need to have the most fuel-efficient heating and air conditioning system they can afford.

Reading EnergyGuide labels

Comparing EnergyGuide labels is a good way to determine how energy efficient a particular piece of equipment will be. These yellow-and-black stickers use data amassed by the U.S. Department of Energy to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions. These labels put all the facts you need all in one place without all of the marketing hype. This information includes:

  • The make and model of the equipment
  • An estimated annual cost (in dollars) for operating the equipment
  • An estimate for the amount of electricity the appliance consumes yearly
  • A list of key features that you can compare to similar models in the same usage range
  • The EnergyStar logo if this equipment is more energy-efficient than the industry average

EnergyGuide labels are required for several different types of appliances, including water heaters, heat pumps, window air conditioners and central air conditioners, pool heaters, furnaces, boilers, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers and clothes washers. If you’re looking to replace a range, oven, dryer, humidifier or dehumidifier, you won’t find this handy label.
