Nobody wants to deal with an air conditioner replacement. Sometimes, however, it becomes necessary. After all, no one wants to deal with a broken air conditioner either, especially in the summer. An air conditioner needing a repair or replacement and leaving you overheated and sweaty during the summer is the worst. Luckily, you don’t have to wait until everything breaks down completely to replace your air conditioner! There are several signs you can watch out for that indicate that you may need an AC replacement soon, or that you need one now.
Strange Smells in Your Home
Strange smells in your home can have multiple sources, but there are some smells that can potentially indicate a problem. Burning smells can indicate electrical issues that could spell trouble. However, if it’s your first time booting up your air conditioner for the summer, don’t panic right away. It may just be a buildup of dust and/or dirt in your air conditioning system. Give it about 30 minutes and call a professional if it still smells. If something smells sweet but with a tinge of chemicals (similar to chloroform), that’s another indication of a problem. This smell is likely air conditioner refrigerant, and if you’re smelling it in your home, then you may have a leak in your system somewhere.
Lack of Cool Air
This is perhaps the most obvious sign that something is wrong with your air conditioner. If you aren’t getting any cool air, or if the cool air turns on and off at random points, you may have a problem and need a repair or replacement. Sometimes, a repair is sufficient. However, if you’ve had repairs before and you keep having the same problems, you may want to start considering an AC replacement instead of continuing to get repairs done for something that will continue to cause issues for you. Newer AC units tend to be more energy-efficient, leading to lower energy bills and increased comfort in your home.
Puddles of Water
Water in places it shouldn’t be is never a good sign and can indicate any number of problems in your home, from plumbing issues to air conditioner malfunctions. If you find water near your AC, there are several places it could be coming from and reasons it could be leaking. These reasons include (but are not limited to) being low on refrigerant, a damaged drain pan, and a dirty air filter. If you have any of these problems, they may be relatively quick fixes. However, if you can’t find the problem or if you keep having the same problems, it may be time to consider an AC replacement. Your AC unit shouldn’t be leaking, and if it’s a continuous problem, you may want to save yourself the headache and replace it.
Loud Noises
If you’re suddenly hearing banging, squeaking, or other strange noises coming from your AC unit, that’s not normal! An air conditioner is generally supposed to run at a very low volume, so if you can hear yours working at a higher volume than it usually does, you should call a professional to take a look at it. If your AC is aging and getting louder, it’s time to consider an AC replacement. Yours may have a serious problem.
