At first glance, your HVAC system can seem too complicated for a homeowner to understand. But knowing some things about how your system operates can be a big benefit as you manage your home comfort and your energy bills. Here are a few answers to common questions to help you get a grip on the HVAC systems in your home.
How does my HVAC system work?
Your thermostat communicates with a thermometer somewhere in your home. When the thermometer reports a temperature that’s not near the temperature your thermostat wants to keep, the thermostat tells your furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump to activate. Those systems then heat or cool air and use fans to circulate the air through your home until the temperature is changed.
What makes my system work badly or fail?
If you neglect your annual maintenance, system components can wear out and fail; having your system inspected once a year can help keep your system working optimally. But the number one cause of system failure is very simple: clogged air filters prevent air from moving through your home, and overtax your furnace or A/C fan motors. Change your air filters once a month to protect your system.
How can I make my system work better?
There are many ways to increase your energy efficiency and home comfort. Here are a few:
- Balance your humidity — Air with the proper humidity holds temperatures longer, and discourages the growth of filter-clogging mold and fungal spores.
- Seal air leaks around your home — When air escapes your living areas, it carries your comfortable temperature with it.
- Manage your insulation — If you don’t have enough insulation, your indoor temperature will escape.
- Switch to high-efficiency appliances — Look for Energy Star-certified appliances which will cut your energy bills.
