Winter temperatures in the greater Cleveland area often get very cold. For this reason, many homeowners find it necessary to take some extra steps to prevent pipes from freezing. After all, exposed pipes typically pose several problems during this time of the year.
Frozen pipes that burst can be very expensive because of potential water damage associated with the break. For this reason alone, it’s imperative that you do all you can to prevent this situation from occurring. These tasks should be carried out when the temperature drops below 32°F.
Prevent Pipes from Freezing
- If you have water lines in your garage, keep the garage door closed.
- Keep the thermostat set at the same temperature during the day and night.
- Open both your kitchen and bathroom cabinet under the sink, so warm air can circulate around the plumbing fixtures.
- Turn your faucets on, so they drip very slowly.
Thawing Frozen Pipes
If your pipes do freeze, following these tips will make it easier for you to thaw them out.
- Apply heat to the frozen pipe using a heating pad, hair dryer or small portable heater. Never use a blowtorch or a kerosene/propane heater, as this can be very dangerous.
- Keep your faucets open when you’re heating pipes. As the ice begins to melt, water will start flowing again.
