Since indoor air quality (IAQ) has been shown throughout numerous studies to have a major impact on the health of family members in the home, it stands to reason that it would be beneficial for everyone if clean air were maintained indoors. The problem is that according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there is much more air pollution indoors than outdoors.
Part of the reason for this is that once outdoor pollution gains access to the home, it stays inside and is continuously circulated by whatever ventilation system is in use. In this way, harmful airborne germs are constantly moving throughout the home, degrading the indoor air quality and affecting the health of those inside.
Removal of Airborne Germs
The best way to kill these airborne germs and stop the cycle of re-circulating the poor quality air is to make use of germicidal ultraviolet light. When UV lights are used in a technique called upper-room air germicidal ultraviolet irradiation, studies have shown conclusively that levels of airborne bacteria, mold, mildew, viruses, and fungal spores are significantly reduced.
While the process may sound like a mouthful, in practice it simply involves using germicidal UV lights or lamps that are strategically positioned throughout the home, either in designated rooms or through placement directly in the ductwork of the home.
The reason for the overwhelming effectiveness of ultraviolet light against airborne pathogens is that the light directly acts on their biological makeup, breaking them down and completely disabling them.
Because of this tremendous effectiveness, ultraviolet light irradiation is frequently used in settings where clean air is an absolute must – places like hospitals, food processing facilities, laboratories, and other facilities where indoor air quality is critical to health, safety, and cleanliness.
