Did you know that certain detoxifying plants could actually improve the indoor air quality in your Northeast Ohio area home? Not only do these detoxifying plants clean the air, but they also increase the overall look and comfort of your home. While there are various plants that naturally improve the air quality, the following 5 plants will help get you started to fresher and healthier indoor air.
Aloe (Aloe vera)
Aloe is a succulent plant with many uses. Not only is it known as an air cleaning plant, but its leaves can also be crushed and used as a topical ointment for burns, scrapes and cuts. Aloe thrives in sunny windowsills and only requires a bit of watering when the soil starts to dry.
English Ivy
English ivy is a popular indoor plant that looks lovely spilling over the top of a hanging basket. Research has shown that growing English ivy in your home can begin decreasing mold spores in your home’s air in 24 hours. English ivy thrives in shaded areas out of direct sunlight, and will require pruning to prevent overgrowth.
Peace Lily
Not only are peace lilies a stunning plant to grow indoors but it is also listed in NASA’s list of detoxifying plants that can remove benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene, the three most common VOCs. Peace lilies requiring weekly watering and shaded areas. Keep in mind, however, that peace lilies are toxic to cats and dogs and should be kept out of reach of your pets.
Spider Plant
For those without a green thumb, spider plants are ideal. This hardy, air-cleaning plant is difficult to kill eve with extreme neglect. It also helps to remove formaldehyde, xylene, benzene and carbon monoxide from the air.
Weeping Fig
The weeping fig is a powerhouse against VOCs associated with new furniture and carpeting. Unfortunately, the weeping fig does require a bit of extra care and isn’t as low maintenance as other detoxifying plants.
