Windows are an essential part of any home, but unfortunately that is where energy loss can occur. Windows tend to let in cold and heat, but there are a number of things you can do to turn your windows into energy efficient windows that will increase your utility bill savings.
Weatherstripping and caulking
Windows that open and close can be weatherstripped, while for stationary windows caulking is the best option. These tasks are both relatively simple procedures, and they ensure that your windows won’t let cold drafts or hot breezes into your home.
Energy Star qualified windows
If you’re installing new windows or replacing old ones, make sure that you buy Energy Star qualified windows. Northeastern Ohio is considered to be part of the Northern Zone according to the Efficient Windows Collaborative, and they recommend that energy efficient windows should be double-paned and have a low-e coating.
In cold weather low-e coatings reflect the heat back into your home, while in summer the low-e coating reflects the heat, which is in the form of the summer sun, back outside.
Existing windows
Northeastern Ohio experiences both hot and cold weather, and you can do a lot to improve the functionality of your windows so that your home remains at an even temperature without excessive use of your heating and cooling systems.
During cold weather:
- Close shades and curtains at night and open them during the day; this respectively keeps the cold out and lets in sunshine.
- Make sure that your storm windows are working to their optimum efficiency by doing any necessary repairs and upgrades.
- Place heavy-duty, clear plastic sheets into frames and fit them on the interior of windows.
- Tape plastic film to the inside of your window frames to preclude drafts.
During hot weather:
- Utilize shades, blinds, awnings, and curtains to keep the direct sunlight off your windows.
- Affix reflective sheets onto the exteriors of windows.
