Winter has arrived in northeast Ohio, and for many people that means that the clunky old portable humidifier has made its debut in the living room. Or perhaps you have more modern steam humidifiers in the bedrooms. Either way, you know how inconvenient it can be to constantly refill humidifier reservoirs and clean the mineral deposits that build up.

But why do you go through all this effort? Whether you know it or not, you are trying to maintain ideal relative humidity in your home. As the air gets colder, the humidity level also drops. When the relative humidity goes outside the range of 45 to 55 percent, most people get uncomfortable and try to remedy the problem with portable humidifiers or dehumidifiers.

When you achieve ideal relative humidity, you can avoid some of the following common winter problems:

  • Dry skin, nose and lips
  • Respiratory irritation
  • Flaking wood floors
  • Damage to musical instruments
  • Static shocks
  • Increased growth of microorganisms
  • Colder rooms

While a portable humidifier may be able to affect the humidity level in individual rooms, you will not achieve ideal relative humidity in your entire home unless you use a central humidifier. With a whole-house humidifier, the unit is installed in your ductwork. As heated air flow through, it picks up moisture that it delivers to every room in your home. These systems are generally easy to maintain, operate silently and do not have stagnant water where unwanted organisms can grow.

In addition to improved home comfort when ideal relative humidity is reached, you can also save money by turning down the thermostat. When indoor air has a higher humidity level, it feels warmer than dry air, which means you can turn the thermostat down a couple degrees without sacrificing comfort.
