Five Furnace Noises You Need to Understand
When your furnace is running smoothly, you may grow used to its comforting, low hum. A furnace that’s working properly doesn’t call attention to itself, but a furnace with a problem can squeal, chirp, boom, and rattle.
When your furnace makes odd noises, it’s telling you something is wrong—don’t ignore it!
Here are some common indicators that you need to call your local HVAC contractor for assistance:
Screeching or Squealing
High-pitched screeching is often caused by a loose or damaged blower belt or a malfunctioning blower motor. A technician will need to adjust or replace the belt or motor.
Chirping
Chirping sounds can happen at the beginning of the cold season and may not be an issue. Wait a while, and if the chirping doesn’t subside, it could be caused by a faulty fan belt. Routine maintenance is necessary.
Booming
A loud boom or bang can be an indication of a delayed gas ignition. This happens when gas in the furnace builds up rather than igniting immediately. When the gas finally ignites, it causes a small explosion! Delayed gas ignition can damage your furnace—call a technician.
Rattling
Rattling can indicate that panels or components are loose within your furnace or that parts of the motor or fan are wearing out. If the rattling continues and worsens, your furnace is telling you that needs attention—now! Call your local HVAC contractor for routine service before you’re left without heat.
