Best Practices for Space Heater Safety
Over the course of our lives, we’ve all heard warnings about space heaters. Some of us even have tales of space heater use gone terribly wrong. Electric heating is not by nature a bad thing. In fact, many homes are fitted with baseboard electric heating systems. Whether this is the case for your home or you are planning to use a separate space heater unit, here are a few things to keep in mind this fall and winter.
First, we’ll scare you: According to the National Fire Protection Association, 79% of fatal home-heating fires involve space heaters. With that in mind, take extreme care to only use space heaters in the safest possible conditions:
- All flammable materials should be a minimum of 3 feet away from the heater.
- This 3-feet rule also applies to children and pets!
- Ensure that any permanent electrical heating equipment—such as baseboard heating or even your electric water heater—is installed by a professional and legally up to code.
- THIS IS A BIG ONE: Do not leave space heaters unattended. This means turning them off when you are not in the room or if you go to bed.
- And of course, be sure to test your smoke alarms monthly to ensure the battery and device are still working.
