Have you hit a roadblock with trying to decide how to heat and cool your new home addition? Is extending ductwork unrealistic or too expensive? Explore the versatility offered by ductless mini splits, and you may see that you’ve got a green light to proceed with your plans.
Ductless Mini-Split Components
Ductless mini splits are in essence modified heat-pump systems with the following components:
- Outdoor unit containing the compressor.
- Compact indoor air handlers (up to four).
- A thin three inch conduit.
- Thermostats and remote controls for each air handler.
Versatile Installation
One of the most attractive features of ductless mini splits is versatile and flexible installation. The indoor air handlers are compact, and are usually mounted on a wall. The conduit houses all of the refrigerant tubing, condensate drain, and power supply. Its unobtrusive design only needs a three inch hole through the walls to the air handlers. The outside unit may be located up to 50 feet away from the air handlers.
Energy Efficient
There are many advantages to going ductless. In fact, ducted systems in the average home lose up to 30 percent of conditioned air to leaks, government studies show. On the other hand, ductless mini splits are self-contained systems with high velocity airflow and near zero energy loss. It’s also possible that your current heating and cooling system may not carry the extra load of extending ducts.
With a new ductless mini split system, you could extend its uses beyond a single room addition to other areas of your home that would benefit with a zoning system. Each air handler is a zone, controlled by its own thermostat and remote control. This provides occupants individual comfort, and provides you energy savings. You don’t need to heat or cool unoccupied zones.
