Humans have used  geothermal energy from geysers and hot springs since Roman times, for space heating and to fill public baths. It wasn’t until the late 1940s that a geothermal heat pump was used successfully to harness the heat at the Earth’s surface, which is a constant 45 to 55 degrees all year long. Now it is quickly gaining popularity in the United States.

Benefits of a geothermal installation include:

  • With a 50 to 70 percent savings on heating and a 30 to 50 percent savings on your cooling costs, a geothermal heat pump quickly pays for itself. Using the heat from the Earth to heat and cool your home is very environmentally friendly. No greenhouse gases are emitted into the atmosphere.
  • No possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning since there is no fuel burned.
  • The geothermal heat pump system has a longer life span than conventional heat pumps and furnaces.
  • The water in the hot water tank is preheated.

The main components are:

  • Heat pump:  The indoor and protected from the outside elements. part of the system.
  • Ground loop: Holes are drilled into the ground 175 to 200 feet down. A series of small fluid-filled pipes are inserted. This loop field is connected to the heat pump.
  • Water heater: The hot water heater is connected to your system so your energy costs are even lower.
