If you are trying to save some money on your monthly energy bills, it’s important to gather a deeper understanding of your appliance energy usage rates so that you can determine how to bring costs down. Before you can do this, it’s helpful to know what watts and kilowatts are. A watt is a unit of power that measures the rate of energy transfer or conversion and a kilowatt equals 1,000 watts.
Fortunately, there’s an easy formula for measuring the estimated energy consumption of appliances every day. This formula is (wattage × the hours an appliance is used per day) ÷ 1,000 = daily kilowatt-hour consumption, or kWh. Once you have a daily number for power consumption of a particular appliance, multiply it by the number of days that you use it throughout the course of the year in order to find the yearly kWh.
Once you get to this point, you will know the appliance energy usage for a single year, but there is one last step to get an actual number in dollars. To estimate the annual cost of running any appliance, multiply whatever the annual consumption per year of the appliance in kWh by whatever your local power company’s rate is per kWh consumed. At this point, you’ll have a number in real dollars that can tell you what it’s costing you every year to run any appliance.
