When you suspect that you might have some duct problems in hour home, it’s important to identify issues that are impacting the performance of your ducts and HVAC system in general. Your cooling and heating ducts play an essential role in delivering conditioned air in your home, so any problems should be addressed promptly and correctly.

Some of the more common problems include:

  • Missing return and supply air registers
  • Undersized duct openings
  • Improper duct routing
  • Corrosion
  • Leaky duct connections
  • Defective heating and cooling materials
  • Asbestos

The consequences of these issues can greatly impact the quality of the air in your home. In fact, you could experience reduced air flow, increased interior temperatures, and an increase in dust, mold or other pathogens entering into your interior spaces if these problems are not addressed.

Some issues may not be immediately visible, but can be discovered inside of your ductwork with a little detective work. For instance, an air filter that gets sucked into the duct system can block airflow and cause a fire hazard. Insulation can also get caught inside and cause similar duct problems. Dirty blower fan blades can also reduce airflow.

Collapsed or crushed transit ducts or sections of flex duct can also restrict the flow of air. In fact, a collapsed duct section can restrict the airflow to the point where nothing is coming out of some or all of your vents. This can cause your HVAC system to overwork itself trying to compensate, and eventually, it will break down.

Fortunately, these duct problems are all fixable. Dirty ductwork and fan blades can be cleaned, obstructions can be removed, leaks can be sealed, and collapsed sections can be rebuilt.
