Air-source heat pumps are an increasingly popular alternative to the typical forced-air systems.  They can provide the same comfort levels while helping you save money on energy costs because of their heightened energy-efficiency.  If you are considering a new HVAC system, be sure to consider air-source heat pumps.

When properly used, air-source pumps produce 1.5 to 3 times more heat for a house than the electricity it uses.  They are able to be so efficient because they move heat rather than convert it from a fuel which is what occurs in combustion heating systems.

Air-source pumps take heat from the outside and pump it through coils that are filled with refrigerant.  They also have a reversing valve.  This allows the pump to release heat rather than pump it into your home.  Once the heat is released outside, the refrigerant cools, flows back in and absorbs more heat from inside.

Residential heat pumps all have an Energy Guide Label that details its performance rating.  This allows you to compare various brands to see how efficient they are and what sort of comfort levels they will be able to provide for your house.
