We’ll just say it- depending on the year, Cleveland summers can either be very pleasant or they can be the worst. They can be humid and hot, especially with Cleveland being right on Lake Erie. The temperatures and the humidity can make for one miserable summer, and trying to ward off the heat with ice packs and cool drinks might not make things much more comfortable. The best thing you can do to beat the heat is to make sure that your home is prepared for summer! There are plenty of small steps you can take to ensure that you have a cool, dry Cleveland summer. 

Make Sure Your AC Has Been Serviced

One of the most important steps in preparing your home for summer is to service your air conditioning unit. Most AC units need to be serviced annually, so if you haven’t done that yet, it’s a good idea to book an appointment before the temperatures really start getting high and HVAC companies are busy. You don’t want to be stuck with a broken AC and a two-week wait to get it serviced. Keeping up with annual AC maintenance is similar to having an annual checkup with your doctor- even if there’s nothing obviously wrong, having a professional take a look at it is necessary to keep the system working as efficiently as possible. 

Remember to Change Your Air Filters

Ideally, filters on most air conditioning units should be changed every two to four months, but if it’s slipped your mind recently, you’re certainly not alone. Many of us don’t think about how much dirt, dust, hair, and other debris ends up in our AC filters, but that kind of buildup can really impede your system from functioning properly. Try writing down the date on the filter when you put in a new one so that there’s never any doubt about when you last changed it. 

Check Your Insulation

It may be time to upgrade your insulation and/or add more. The easiest way to tell if you need more insulation is to visually inspect your attic. Do this early in the season on a cool day; attics can get dangerously hot. If your insulation is at the same level as your floor joists, it’s probably time to add some more or even replace it entirely. Worn-out or insufficient insulation can cause your utility bills to skyrocket, so if your bills have gone up and your regular energy usage routine hasn’t, you may want to check your insulation- it could be the culprit. Make sure that your attic has proper ventilation as well so that hot air doesn’t build up and cause the rest of your home to heat up.

Check Your Fans

Does your home have ceiling fans? If so, check those and make sure they’re working properly before summer hits. Changing the direction of the fans to counterclockwise can help lower energy costs. On days that are warm, but not hot, a ceiling fan may be sufficient enough to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. Dusting off the blades is a good idea if you haven’t had the fan running for a while- you definitely don’t want to start up your fan and send dust flying all over the place!

One of those questions is whether or not it is safe or a good idea to let people into your home to service your AC, heating system, etc. The short answer is yes, and it actually might be an ideal time to get your home serviced. If you’re working from home, this means you don’t need to take time off of work to make sure that you’re home to let the technicians in.
