As R-22 Freon is being phased out, you may find yourself paying more and waiting longer if your system needs a refill of coolant. By 2020, all production or imports of virgin R-22 will be stopped. If your system requires R-22, you will either have to use recovered and recycled or reclaimed R-22, which will be in short supply.
You may be wondering what you can do now to avoid having to pay higher prices for a recharge or wait for service because of the Freon shortages. First, contact your HVAC contractor now to discuss your options. Some systems can be retrofitted to allow for the use of R-407C. Or, better yet, now is the time to consider upgrading to a new energy-efficient air conditioning system and avoid any R-22 shortages.
If your current central air conditioning unit is older than 12 years old, you could slash your cooling costs by almost 30 percent by upgrading to a new Energy Star-certified unit. Not only will you avoid Freon shortages, but also you may be eligible for tax credits or rebates from your utility company.
