After a Cleveland winter, you may not want to think about an air conditioner replacement, but the winter won’t last forever and you don’t want to be uncomfortable come summer. Before you spend money on a replacement, have your HVAC professional check the system. Current A/C issues could be a fouled line or a duct or filter problem. Still, other signals may have you bite the bullet and look for a new A/C system.
Is an A/C replacement necessary?
Here are some potential reasons that could mean air conditioner replacement sooner rather than later.
- Too old: Most A/C units have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years. If yours is over 10 years old, ask your HVAC professional to perform a load calculation. Such a test will determine the system size you need for maximum efficiency and comfort. It measures the gain and loss of heat and takes into consideration house size and layout, insulation and window type, as well as building materials, vents and ducts.
- Too expensive: An HVAC service contract will bring technicians regularly throughout the year to check and maintain your system. If you find your unit needs repairs more often than the scheduled service visits, it may be a sign of problems. When the system runs loudly and continuously or your house remains humid or increasingly dusty, you may need a new unit.
- Too energy inefficient: If you want to improve your energy savings, consider air conditioner replacement. Like anything else, the engineering on HVAC units improves over time. And, since 2006, A/Cs are required to have a seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of 13 or higher. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the product. Efficient air conditioning systems will lower your utility bills by 20 to 40 percent while also reducing your environmental impact.
