Geothermal heating and cooling systems are well-known for their low maintenance and longevity. However, no system or equipment is infallible, so there could be times when your geothermal system stops heating or cooling.

You may wonder why your geothermal system is acting up, and the answer is best left to a qualified HVAC contractor. However, there are some easy troubleshooting steps that you can take before calling in a professional.

  • Check the thermostat. Make sure that the thermostat is in the on position and the switch is on cool or heat, whichever is applicable. Then check that the temperature selection is set for the correct temperature. If the geothermal system isn’t cooling, try setting the temperature selection as low as the thermostat will go to see if the system will turn on. If the system isn’t heating, try setting the selection as high as the thermostat will go.
  • Inspect the air filter. A clogged air filter can disrupts the air flow through the registers. Change the air filter if it’s full of dust and debris.
  • Check the registers. Make sure they’re all open and clear of obstructions so cooled or heated air can circulate throughout your home.
  • Examine the power disconnect switches. Look for a switch at each unit, no matter whether it is indoors or outdoors. Either could have been turned to the off position.
  • Examine the fuses or switches in your electrical panel. Make sure the switches for the geothermal system have not been tripped or that the fuses have not blown.

The best solution to the problem of your geothermal system acting up is to first ensure that you schedule regular maintenance. This can head off problems down the road. Call a professional HVAC technician if there is a problem that can’t be solved with the above steps.
