Myths are good fun when it comes to fairy tales and folklore, but there’s no place for rumors and untruths when it comes to your HVAC system. Here are some of the most common electricity-use myths that are spread by unknowledgeable individuals along with the actual facts that put these fallacies to rest.

Electricity-Use Myths Debunked

Myth: Your home will warm up faster when you turn the thermostat up to a temperature higher than where you actually want it.

Fact: Your furnace doesn’t work that way. Turning the thermostat up to 80 degrees when you really want it to be 70 degrees doesn’t warm your home any faster and can cause the furnace to overshoot the desired temperature, resulting in wasted electricity and a higher power bill.

Myth: Once you turn your air conditioner on, you should leave it on for the entire season.

Fact: Turning your air conditioner off (or down, when the outside temperatures are extremely hot) when you leave the house saves you money. If your home is properly insulated, your home may actually stay comfortable all day long. Just remember to keep the doors and windows closed, as your A/C will have to once again rid the house of humidity when you turn it on again.

Myth: You can save big by purchasing an energy-efficient air conditioner.

Fact: Yes, you’ll save money with a highly efficient air conditioner, but the unit still needs to be sized and installed properly. Believe it or not, studies have shown that most of us have improperly installed air conditioners and duct systems, which can result in wasted power. Plus, if your home isn’t properly weatherized, much of the added furnace efficiency will be wasted through air leaks and poor insulation.

Myth: If you don’t know much about HVAC systems, you’re going to waste a lot of money.
