Many problems that cause your air conditioner to stop working require the evaluation of a professional HVAC technician. However, there are a few basic A/C troubleshooting tips you can use before you call in the pros. If an easy fix isn’t enough to solve the problem, you can leave more difficult work to a qualified contractor.

  1. Airflow feels inadequate: When you hold your hand up to a supply duct, you should feel a strong, steady flow of cold air coming from it. If you don’t, check accessible ducts for loose connections, closed dampers, bends or crimps. If possible, correct any problems you find. Also inspect the air filter for debris buildup and change it if it’s clogged. If that doesn’t fix the issue, check the evaporator coil and air handler for ice buildup, which may require the attention of a professional.
  2. Home feels too humid:  Part of an air conditioner’s job is to dehumidify the space. If the air feels too humid, first check the temperature controls. Even if the humidity is high, make sure the temperature continues to drop when the air conditioner is running. It might also behoove some homeowners to look into having the ductwork modified, which will increase the amount of return air. You can also leave all doors in your home open so there’s more space for the air conditioner to cool. It’s probably oversized, and the longer you can make its cycles last, the better dehumidification can occur.
  3. A/C won’t start: First check the thermostat and ensure the controls are set to “cool” and that the desired temperature is lower than the actual temperature in the room. Next check the circuit breaker to ensure that both the indoor and outdoor units are getting power, then look at the wiring to ensure nothing is frayed or cut.
